Jonah Hex

Movie Review by Phil & Carol

“Graphic Novel” fits the film as well as Hex’s beginnings. Hex first appeared in an ad for All-Star Western #10 which was published in various Nov/Dec 1971-dated DC comics; his first full-story appearance was published a few weeks later in volume two of All-Star Western #10 (1972). Jonah Hex moved into his own self-titled series in 1977. The series lasted for 92 issues with Michael Fleisher as the main writer. Apparently the script writers took license with Hex’s comic book life, but WOW!, what a great film. Action hero, minus the hero; a western with touches of Clint Eastwood’s Fistful of Dollars. Add excellent performances by Josh Brolin (Hex) and John Malcovich (Turnbull), lots of violence fueled action and Warner Brothers may have a summer blockbuster. (The dialog is trite and punchy, but what do you expect for a comic book hero?) If Hex isn’t the best of this summer season, we’re in for a hot summer! Tons of action in this movie version of the Jonah Hex Graphic Novel (comic book). Josh Brolin, John Malcovich and Megan Fox are terrific in their respective roles. Humor, action and a first rate storyline make for a good, solid eighty minutes in the theater.
