Shutter Island

A hard to describe drama staring Leonard DiCaprio as a US Marshall investigating the disappearance of an inmate at a Federal mental hospital. Melodramatic to the hilt – upon reflection this film may come to define melodrama. Foreboding music, dark cinematography, rain, lightning, howling wind; need I say more? Neither DiCaprio, nor Martin Scorsese, the director, are at the top of their game. Perhaps because the film painstakingly builds to a disappointing, in non-existent, climax. PS I really wanted to like this film. This is a very scary film if you are just listening to the music. Otherwise, if you are looking for something frightening, you are in the wrong theater. The acting is superb – Leonardo DiCaprio, although forever young in face, does a terrific job as the seasoned “US Marshall”. As you sit and watch the story unfold you may have some insight as to what’s up but don’t count on it. I felt myself squirming mid-way, never a good sign. Wait to watch it at home so you can take a couple of breaks!
