The Hurt Locker

A stunningly real but disturbing portrayal of the war in Iraq. Most disturbing – besides the tension surrounding the bomb disposal unit – were the scenes where Iraqi citizens repeatedly approached US soldiers despite demands to stay back and/or leave an area. The feeling one gets harks back to the Deer Hunter, rather than Apocalypse Now. Most depressing is that the film is nothing like Guadalcanal Diary or other “patriotic” WWII films. Worth seeing to remind us what our troops face everyday. I believe that the true value of this film is that upon exiting the theater the viewer has a very good idea of what it is like to be in a war. Having never experienced anything even close to combat, I now know what these men and women must be experiencing on a day to day basis. Shot as a “documentary”, this fictional look at a battalion of men fighting in Baghdad whose mission is to find and diffuse IE D's, the tension is felt in the air as they do their job. A very worthwhile but disturbing film.
