| A strong performance by Morgan Freeman (supported by Matt Damon) can't save a mediocre script and lackluster directing. While the portrayal of Nelson Mandela is inspiring, the movie itself is not any better then the myriad of sports movies that can be used as motivational seminars. Most recently, The Blind Side comes to mind.
Admittedly, if Mandela is half the genius as portrayed on the screen here, he clearly deserves all the accolades, and the Nobel Peace Prize, that he has been awarded. As a biopic, the movie shows the strength and character of Mandela by focusing on a narrow, but telling, episode after the fall of apartheid in South Africa.
| I believe that Morgan Freeman has given an accurate portrayal of Nelson Mandela and it was a truly inspired performance. In that sense the film was interesting but it was a bit lengthy and except for the rugby, a bit lifeless. Matt Damon added additional star-power but not quite enough to send a charge through the audience. Good but can certainly wait for video release.
