| Having just seen, and enjoyed, Clooney in Men Who Stare at Goats, I didn’t know what to expect. Could Clooney make two excellent movies released within months of each other? The answer is a resounding yes.
In fact, Air is even better than Goats, and Clooney is better here than in Goats. Good enough to possibly earn another Oscar nomination.
As importantly, the film may become an icon for the Great Recession. As the Graduate helped define the Sixties, Up in the Air may well depict the opening decade of the “oughts”. Clashing generations, economic downturns, massive layoffs, computerization and isolation – this film touches on most of the complex issues of the day.
| After just suffering through Men Who Stare at Goats, I wasn’t thrilled with having to sit through another George Clooney movie. But I am certainly glad that I did. He is charming and funny but most of all terrific. He plays Ryan, the guy who flies around the country most of the year firing people from their jobs; because the employees’ bosses can’t do it. The story is a wild, fantastical journey but takes a bit of a turn later in the movie. Quite the performance by Clooney and well supported by Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. Funny, yet poignant.
