Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

Movie Review by Phil & Carol
Phil - Must See Now!Carol - Worth the Matinee Price
An intriguing film that starts out as a B-grade detective thriller, or in other words, real pulp fiction. Not surprisingly it has a Quentin Tarintino feel about it, though directed by German born Werner Herzog. The film, a remake of a 1992 movie starring Harvey Keitel, has already garnered praise for Nicholas Cage as a driven, addicted and Machiavellian New Orleans detective. As Cage plunges pell-mell into the abyss, his portrayal achieves almost mystical proportions. At times one can almost feel his drug induced stupor : heart racing, and sweat seeping from his pores. The viewer is pulled, scene by scene, waiting for his character to make one last fatalistic error. One of Cage’s better movies of the last decade. An outstanding performance by Nicholas Cage is the reason to see this film. He is just amazing. He plays a cop caught between personal physical pain and doing the kind of job he was meant to do. It is difficult to figure out just what and where this story is heading but stick with it; you won’t be disappointed.
