| Probably the worst Matt Damon movie I ever saw. And probably the blame goes to the director. Interestingly the film pairs Damon with director Steven Soderbergh; the team that gave us the Bourne trilogy of films, which for the most part were excellent thrillers that kept us on the edge of our seats.
Here the director creates neither comedy, drama nor satire; but rather leaves the film and audience somewhere in the “muddle” of all three. A cinephile I know put it best: “like a Coen brothers’ movie gone bad”.
| The film is based on a true incident about a whistle blower’s story and his “investigating” of his company in conjunction with the FBI. This was obviously a serious narrative but the take-off for this movie was more tongue-in-cheek. In fact, Matt Damon’s role as whistle blower was made to be silly when in fact it shouldn’t have been. Aside from this, the story was confusing and not well told. It does wind itself out in the end but by then it is too late and the viewer is still left unsatisfied.
