Watchmen

Movie Review by Phil & Carol
Phil - Must See Now!Carol - Must See Now!
The reader should know that I have never read The Watchmen comic series; indeed, if I must confess I have not read a comic book in over 30 years. I have however, especially in the last few years, seen a few comic book hero movies, including one ( or two) "Hulk" movies, an "Ironman " movie, three or more "Superman" movies, three or more Batman movies, two or three Spiderman movies and probably a few others that don't easily come to mind -if you're interested, just search our movie review database. Watchmen was, all in all, despite its two-hour forty minute length, one of the more interesting and captivating of the "comic book" movies I've seen in recent memory. Even with no prior background in the subject matter, it didn't take long to get into the theme of things. The director provided adequate explanation for each character (note I do not use the term "super hero") to bring one up to speed, even if unfamiliar with the comic book series. Wikipedia quoting from an interview with the writer of the limited graphic novel series that spawned the movie:" 'That'd be a good way to start a comic book: have a famous super-hero found dead.' As the mystery unraveled, we would be led deeper and deeper into the real heart of this super-hero's world, and show a reality that was very different to the general public image of the super-hero." Alan Moore on the basis for Watchmen. The quote sums up the movie, without giving much away. I enjoyed it immensely; if you like action, go see it on the big screen-where it deserves to be seen. And remember, there's a little bit of political satire, a lot of violence (it is called a "graphic" novel for a reason) and is set during the cold war-the late 1980s. I had no “expectations” as to what this movie was about. I never read the graphic novel and I really didn’t know the storyline. So I went in cold and upon reflection that was probably the best thing I could have done. Although it took me a bit to settle into the film, it was quick paced, a bit of a history lesson as the film was set in 1985 and a love story to boot. All in all, a good 2 ˝ hours spent in the theater.
