Phil - Must See Now!Carol - Must See Now!
An excellent art house film that concentrates on the emotional burden borne by second generation WWII German citizens. Despite its short comings, the movie conveys – or at least raises – the issue of German Citizens’ guilt for ignoring the Nazi’s treatment of Jews during the Holocaust. Based on the novel of the same name, this is the story of a young man “coming of age” as a second generation German and a woman 20 years his senior. Kate Winslet stars as the woman and she is just amazing. Her range of acting skills is very mature and she is a joy to watch. The young man in her life is played by David Kross, making his major film debut. He was cast in the role at the age of 15 but the sexual scenes were not filmed until the day after his 18th birthday! The other interesting fact of note about Kross is that he had to learn English for the role and speak it with an English accent. Quite a feat for such a young man. Acting alone makes this film worth seeing.
