Deception

An engaging movie that uses suspense to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. I always appreciate a creative script and a new plot. This film offers some of both, but misses on other points. While I’m not a prude, I expect the sex scenes to be more than gratuitous. Set the scene, explain the plot – but don’t give us soft porn for soft porn sake. And the music score should not overwhelm the screenplay. Here the music tends to dominate, rushing us along while the acting and dialogue strain to keep up. Unfortunately a disappointing match of Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor. As the title may imply, this is a mystery that keeps the viewer on edge throughout. The “mystery” is not the only reason for the tension. The first 45 minutes or so are what you might call “gratuitous sex” that the director uses to essentially set the scene. It is uncomfortable, to say the least, to watch this in a movie theater. Hence I say, rent it in the comfort of your own viewing area!
