Battle In Seattle

Movie Review by Phil & Carol
Phil - Must See Now!Carol - Must See Now!
An inspirational and educational film based on the 1999 WTO (World Trade Organization) conference set for Seattle and the resulting protests. The mainstream media at the time provided little insight into the actual events or motivations. Later billed as the first “internet” protest, the emotion and sheer numbers of protesters caught the City, State and WTO off guard. The resulting disruption and violent reaction of all sides thereafter is engagingly presented. While the days of riot may have been similar to those of the 1968 Democratic Convention, the authorities’ decision to release the protesters without charges apparently benefitted all concerned. Without the likes of a “Chicago 8” trial, no one ended up in jail and the mainstream media has paid little attention since. This film attempts to rekindle the fires.Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson and Martin Henderson star. Screened at Sarasota Film Festival 2008 The closing film of the Sarasota Film Festival 2008 is a re-enactment of the World Trade Organization protest in Seattle in late 1999. Newcomer writer/director Stuart Townsend offers us a fictionalized story that hopefully will bring this incredible story back into the world spotlight. To engage the audience, Townsend has presented us with a core of characters that we connect with and really care about. Then we watch them fight for what they know is the right thing to do. Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson, and Ray Liotta lead an excellent cast.
