Movie Reviews - Two for the Show

California Dreamin' (Endless)

Movie Review by Phil & Carol
Phil - Must See Now!Carol - Wait for the Video
Currently denominated “endless” because the writer/director of this film was killed in an auto accident before final editing. In tribute to him, the film is being screened untouched. Even at two hours and thirty five minutes, the film holds the audience. The drama, sometimes serious, sometimes funny touches on international politics while exploring the familiar theme of bullying, a la “Walking Tall”. Armand Assante as a frustrated Marine Captain under NATO command and Razvan Vasilescu as his antagonist dominate the film while Maria Dinulescu epitomizes the boredom and hope(hence the title) as experienced by youth trapped in third world conditions. Screened at the Sarasota Film Festival 2008 Tragically, director/writer Christian Nemescu was killed in an automobile accident before he could finish this film so one has to be a bit forgiving when evaluating this movie. It runs very long, 155 minutes; but if you can sit through the first hour of development you are in for a true treat. Basically a NATO train transporting military equipment is stopped by a train chief in a small town purportedly because they do not have the appropriate paperwork. The interaction of the Marines with the townspeople is clever and the characters are well developed so that the viewer feels connected to the characters. Watch for young Romanian Maria Dinulescu (Monica) in upcoming films. Screened at the Sarasota Film Festival 2008
