Perhaps, because we saw this film late, we didn't get the full impact; or perhaps because of all the wonderful reviews, we were destined to be disappointed. And disappointed we were.
Set in the early days of World War II, this anti-war film will have timeless appeal while also being sometimes slow and sometimes melodramatic.
| When a film almost puts me to sleep for the first 15 minutes I have to wonder at it’s worth. And I also wonder how it could be nominated in the “Best Picture of the Year” category. It is a wonderfully acted yet slow moving film. Having not read the novel, there is no way to compare it, but many people with whom I discussed this film said they enjoyed the book much more. So, rent it or read it; your choice!
