| A movie like this, for me, is difficult to review. “Based” on a true story – actually political intrigue – about the U.S. intervention in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion. More to the point, it’s difficult to separate my personal politics from analysis of the movie. (With the benefit of hindsight, it’s easier to criticize the political decisions.) Then again this says much about both the acting and directing. The film plays more like a documentary than a movie, obviously because of the artists’ ability to convey realism. Philip Seymour Hoffman steals the scenes he’s in, even from Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.
| If you are wondering just how Afghanistan became such a “part of our lives” this may help to clear it up. This is the true story of how it happened and will touch you in many different ways. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll wonder why it is continuing. Go see it; a very informative film. Oh yes, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and especially Phillip Seymour Hoffman are very entertaining!
