| And I don’t even like the music of Steven Sondheim ! The film ,though, is much more, mostly as a result of Johnny Depp-who continues to surprise and excel. Reminiscent of the film version of Evita.
| I’ve been “trying” to see a production of Sweeney Todd in any form for several years. Finally I have succeeded and it was worth the wait. Johnny Depp is fabulous in his role as Todd, the truly evil barber of Fleet Street and pairing him with Helena Bonham Carter is just genius. And even MORE evil are Alan Rickman’s portrayal of Judge Turpin and Timothy Small as Beadle Bamford (he is TRULY despicable!). The dark almost monochrome filming of this contrasted with the red of oh so much blood is chilling. Surely there will be nominations in the future for this film and its stars.
