| Interesting how two westerns, released almost at the same time, could be so different. 3:10 to Yuma is a classic western, entertaining to the end. Jesse James is more art than movie, more social commentary than western. Almost every review will note that its pace is slow allowing the reviewer time to enjoy the cinematography which, along with the acting of Casey Affleck, are the highlights of the film. As for Casey Affleck – his portrayal of Robert Howard (but for the last 15 minutes) is mesmerizing. | An attempt was made to “intellectualize” the life and times of Jesse James. It is a miserable failure. Although it is interesting to see Brad Pitt upstaged by the up and coming Casey Afflect, that is not enough reason to spend time or money on this slow, tedious film.
