Another in a long line of motivational films using high school sports as its teaching vehicle. As are many, this is “based” on a real life family. Set in the early 70’s it follows the trials and troubles of a teenage girl wanting to play on the boys soccer team – who must first win the attention and confidence of her father. Aimed at middle school girls, soccer fans, and their parents. Based loosely on the story of a young girl who fights for her right to compete in the sport of her choice, this film is directed at the Junior High age child. And in that regard it is excellent. Carly Schroeder portrays Gracie, the younger sister of a star soccer player. On screen coach and father played by Dermot Mulroney is a strong support but Schroeder is clearly the crowd pleaser. Watch for the roll of Gracie’s mom (Elizabeth Shue) and see if you agree that she is the “true” hero. Directed by: David Guggenheim
