| An excellent thriller, especially considering that the audience already knows the ending. Perhaps, as the film makers suggest, we really watch to find out the “why”. In the case of Robert Hannsen money apparently wasn’t the overriding motivation. So, why does a 20 some-year veteran of the FBI sell secrets and put our national security at risk? The film hints at various motives, leaving plenty of room for speculation and conversation.
Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillippe provide nail biting entertainment in a surprisingly interesting portrayal of the last few months of Hannsen’s escapade.
| Consider this: You know the story generally (the greatest security breach in the history of the US). You probably know the ending. So why would you need to see another “based on a true story”? Because this story is told so well, and the acting is so riveting. Chris Cooper as Robert Hanssen is just terrific as is Ryan Phillippe as the agent assigned to Hanssen. No real action, no car chases, no shoot-outs. Just good solid storytelling that keeps the viewer hanging on every word.
