Amazing Grace

I might be a little biased – I always loved the hymn and always hated slavery. But I was never a student of history and, shame-on-me, never learned of William Wilberforce. A well told tale of persistence and personal sacrifice in a well heeled politician [talk about suspending disbelief!] but its true. A good history and life lesson for the less passionate among us. This film starred a cast that I, in my ignorance, was unfamiliar with. Each was very strong in their role. William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) served in the British House of Commons in the late 18th Century. He was a charismatic young man with passionate views on many social issues. This is the story of his battle to stop the slave trade in Great Britain. It is an important story, well portrayed; but it takes a very long time for the story to unfold. It is best rented so that several breaks can be taken during the film. Directed by: Michael Apted
