| A difficult film to review - both fantasy and real, too violent for children and too simplistic to challenge an inquiring mind. While set in the beginning year of Franco’s rule in Spain, it has little if any political overtones. Rather it is a classic story of a bully acting under color of law. The more I analyze this film, the less I think of it.
| When a child faces horrors, she often finds comfort in her imagination. Thus is this story of a young girl who accompanies her mother on the road to survival during the period of 1944 fascist Spain. This is one time that I wished that I understood Spanish so that I could concentrate on the film completely rather than reading the subtitles. Excellent casting, directing and an exceptional screenplay has lead to an Oscar nomination, as best foreign film.
