| A heavy film with strong performances by Cate Blanchett and Dame Judi Dench. Both received Oscar nominations, Blanchett for Best Supporting Actress, Dench for Best Actress. Much more a vehicle for Dench and Blanchett that a movie to enjoy and talk about. As much narration as action, following the private thoughts of an aging lesbian pursuing a younger woman. The film slowly builds, with dark hints of its impending disaster and ending with no denouement; leaving the viewer both exhausted and unfulfilled.
| I left the movie theater exhausted - a good thing in this case. The tension that unfolds throughout the film keeps the viewer still in her seat waiting for bad things to happen. And happen they do. Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett both give stunning performances, each portraying characters with serious background flaws. Dench is mostly the narrator, reading us her thoughts (“notes”) from her diary. Blanchett is the younger, new pottery teacher who manages to turn her personal life into a nightmare. A remarkable film, indeed.
