The Painted Veil

Movie Review by Phil & Carol
Phil - Wait for the VideoCarol - Worth the Matinee Price
An otherwise uninspiring adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s novel, the best features of this film are the overwhelming panoramas of Chinese landscape. Perhaps because of the wonderful camera work we watch unattached and unconnected. Curran’s direction creates a film that feels more like a clinical experiment than real life experience - as if we have been in an art museum, in a room full of early 20th century landscapes and portraits. This, in a word, is a beautiful film. Naomi Watts and Edward Norton join together in a moving love story set in 1920’s China. The cinematography alone is worth the price of admission. Based on a W. Somerset Maugham story, it is the tail of 2 people from different intellectual and social backgrounds. Their separate and then combined experiences make for an intriguing storyline. Directed by John Curran
