Blood Diamond is as much an action thriller as morality play, bringing to the big screen all the horrors of massacre and child soldiers that pepper the BBC world news and get 10-15 lines under an international date line.
Whether its diamonds, ethnic cleansing or civil war, clearly sub-Saharan Africa is a place far from the world’s conscience - and possibly out of anyone’s ability to control - at least as long as disease, poverty and hunger are so rampant. | Another in a spate of consciousness awareness films, this violent look at the illegal diamond trade in Sierra Leone is emotional and sends a strong message. Leonardo DiCaprio gives a stunning performance as the lead and gets wonderful support from Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly.
