| Nick Nolte and Trevor Morgan star in this moving film about fathers and sons. Both deserve accolades for their performances and I wouldn’t be surprised if Nolte is nominated for an Oscar. This film is about directing, acting and screenplay. Any lesser performance by either Nolte or Trevor Morgan and the viewer would have been left with a melodrama about an aging recluse. As completed, however, the film highlights the role of fatherhood from both parent and child perspectives. An interesting reversal allows us to experience not male bonding , but the growth and importance of a father-son relationship. | When you walk out of the theater, try to remember that this film was written and directed by a 28 year old, James Ponsoldt. I must admit that without the incredible performances by Nick Nolte and Trevor Morgan this film would have failed. But isn’t that what it is all about? Having a strong cast that can make your film shine on the screen? And shine it does. It is the story of the relationship of a father and son which is expanded to include the surrogate father, played by Nolte.
