Another “made for the Art House” film that probably shouldn’t have been made at all. Despite strong performances by Annette Bening and Joseph Cross as neurotic mother and loyal son, this film has little to offer the average film goer. Frenetic and disjointed, it could be distilled to its last 20 minutes and be both better and easier to understand. |
I’ve heard from a number of people that the book, based on the personal memoire of Augusten Burroughs is excellent. Having not read it, I was under-impressed by the film. The cast is first rate. Annette Bening and Jill Clayburgh are so good that you can hardly recognize them. The problem comes in the mid-section of the film. It loses its way and the audience struggles to keep up with the storyline. It does finish well but that isn’t good enough at today’s theater prices.
